Fashionista
Tricks of the Trade

A fashionista is someone who lives and dies by the latest fashion, like the Carrie Bradshaw character in Sex and the City.  When you own and wear the latest fashion trend and can turn heads wherever you go, it makes you feel powerful and "in the know."

But there are a couple of problems with being a fashionista:

1.  It's expensive

2.  Not every trend works on your body

3.  You risk being a lemming

But what's a girl to do?  You have to follow the latest trend, right?

Not necessarily.

Here's a simple way to look like you're following the latest trend without spending the time or money to do so:

1.  Know Your Body

Not every trend looks good on every body.  If the current trend is all about arms but you have killer legs, for example, stick with styles that showcase your legs, even if they're so "last season."  It's about YOU, not the clothes, so pick the clothes that best showcase YOU.

2.  Opt for Classic Silhouettes

Classics are called classics because they have been fashionable for years or even decades.  A sheath, a pencil skirt, wide leg trousers -- all should be in your wardrobe.  Then, like a chicken that can be fried, barbecued, roasted, or stuffed, dress those classics up or down as the occasion demands.

3.  Go Cheap on Trends

Like the latest handbag?  Shoe?  Scarf?  Boot?  Then buy it as cheaply as possible and wear the devil out of it until the trend passes.  NEVER spend a lot of money on trends - they'll be done and over with before you can pay off your credit card.  Instead, invest in the classics you wear every day (see above) and buy those trends at discount.

4.  Develop a Signature

Sienna Miller does Bohemian.  Cameron Diaz does jeans.  Anne Hathaway does shoes.  Pick your favorite accessory, apparel, or color, and become "known" for it as a fashionista.  A signature ups your unique factor and cuts down on lemming (following the crowd) accusations.

5.  Change Your Hair and Makeup

Generally, changing your hair and/or makeup is cheaper than buying clothes.  Keep an eye on the fashion runway hair and makeup trends and let your inner fashionista reign supreme.

Following fashion can be expensive IF you follow every trend you see.  So don't.  Instead, determine the best styles for your body shape, build a base of classics, and add trends as cheaply as possible.  It's the easiest way to be a fashionista...on a budget.
